Community is at the heart of every WOTSO – but like a productive garden it takes a lot of love and effort to create and maintain.
A great example is WOTSO Pyrmont, where a vibrant community of more than 300 members has evolved over the past decade; one that’s friendly, supportive, and productive.
A big reason for its success are the efforts of the WOTSO team in bringing members together with weekly events, activities, and gatherings.
Diverse doesn’t begin to cover it. Recent examples at Pyrmont include Build-a-Bagel, spelling bees, a cookie decorating competition and solving a murder mystery.
Pyrmont Space Leader Lily Middleton says the activities are well attended and create a sense of community for our members, who are a mix of small businesses and freelancers across a large range of industries.
Among them is architect Samantha Goddin, who landed at WOTSO Pyrmont when she was working for a small architectural practice.
“We looked at a few around the area, but they were very clinical and we weren’t interested in that vibe. We found WOTSO, thought it was great, and took an office in December 2016.”
Samantha later bought the business, now called PSA Architects, and is still there just in a different office.
“The eclectic décor was the initial appeal. The ones we had looked were just carpet, white walls, glazed partitions – very sterile.”
She says WOTSO has provided a friendly and welcoming space. She could work from home but prefers to be with people.
“WOTSO is comfortable. It’s the vibe of a large commercial space, having that social culture even though we’re all individual businesses,” she says.
“That’s what I like about it – you don’t feel like you’re stuck at home in a box.”
Pyrmont is one of Sydney’s original suburbs, tucked into a peninsula behind Darling Harbour, with a rich history linked to shipping, quarrying, and manufacturing.
An easy walk to the CBD, it’s a buzzy inner-city neighbourhood with lots of cafes, pubs, and food choices, including the new Sydney Fish Market, which is literally just around the corner.
A new Metro Station is on the way and Sydney City Council has revealed ambitious plans to redevelop the old fish market site with 1,400 new apartments and better waterfront access.
