In a nutshell, tell us about KAV Kreative and how it all began.
KAV Kreative is a boutique Architecture and Interior Design studio boasting a rich blend of experience in the commercial sector, particularly specializing in Workplace, Education, Hospitality, and Retail design. Our journey began in late 2019, and since then, we have steadily expanded our footprint, collaborating with esteemed clients such as KPMG, NRMA, The Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD), Western Sydney University, and more.
As the driving force behind KAV Kreative, I bring over two decades of architectural expertise, coupled with a genuine passion for interior design. My professional background spans various scales of design firms, both in Australia and overseas.
The inception of this business was fueled by a vision to establish a design studio that stands out for its boldness, authenticity, and a distinctive quality we proudly refer to as ‘Without Fluff.’ Our objective was to curate a team that embraces individuality, serves as honest advisors to our clients, and shares a profound dedication to crafting beautiful and functional bespoke spaces.
KAV Kreative’s growth has been organic, propelled by the acclaim of our satisfied clients and recommendations from industry partners. We are immensely fortunate to collaborate with a remarkable clientele that values and entrusts us to bring our passion and expertise to each project.
Congratulations on winning the silver award in the Interior Design Commercial category at the 2024 Australian Better Future Awards! Can you share with us what project led to this recognition?
Thank you, we are so thrilled to have won such a well-recognised and prestigious award that is open to entries from across Australia, celebrating the new KPMG Parramatta workplace located at 3 Parramatta Square.
Our longstanding relationship with KPMG, spanning over a decade, reflects a collaborative partnership with a group of individuals who deeply value attention to detail, passion, and a harmonious blend of beauty and practicality. In late 2021, KPMG approached us for design options when considering the relocation of their Parramatta workplace. Following the selection of their new premises, we were engaged to craft the design for their expansive workplace spanning two floors – Level 15 and Level 16 at 3 Parramatta Square.
Over the course of a year, the dedicated team, comprising cost planners, services engineers, AV consultants, IT specialists, and more, worked tirelessly on the project. The successful completion in mid-2023, both on time and within budget, stands as a testament to our collaborative efforts. Concurrently, we were honoured to extend our design expertise to KPMG’s smaller workplaces in Hobart and Townsville, yielding equally successful outcomes for their business.
With over 20 years of experience in both architectural and interior design environments across Australia and overseas, you’ve honed a deep understanding of creating spaces that connect people to places. How do you leverage this extensive background in your current role as the Director of KAV Kreative?
Throughout my diverse career, where I’ve collaborated with a multitude of businesses and numerous clients, the learning curve has been steep. Mistakes, coupled with lessons gleaned from clients and colleagues, have been instrumental in shaping not only my approach but also my ideals. Over two decades in the industry have profoundly influenced how I lead my studio and the kind of collaborations I cherish.
My philosophy stems from authenticity. I don’t wear a mask to fit the stereotypical image of a designer or architect. I firmly believe in being true to oneself and recognizing that genuine connections are built on authenticity. In my experience, people desire to work with individuals, not personas—a lesson that has become a cornerstone of my professional ethos.
As an adept designer with two decades of industry exposure, I welcome challenges and embrace the inevitability of making mistakes. The continuous pursuit of knowledge keeps my career evolving. In my role as the Director of a growing team, fostering a personable environment is paramount. This approach encourages my team to voice their opinions, feel supported in their learning journey, and not shy away from making mistakes that contribute to their personal and professional growth. Witnessing the success of others is, indeed, one of the most gratifying aspects of my role.
You mentioned to achieve success you need to be your true authentic self. How has this belief shaped your leadership style and influenced the culture and operations of KAV Kreative?
In my extensive experience collaborating with industry partners, clients, and colleagues, a fundamental truth has emerged: embracing one’s authentic self not only establishes a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere but is also profoundly valued and respected. Authenticity is the catalyst for optimal learning, self-expression, and collaborative excellence. It is the key to excelling in our chosen passion—an ethos I consistently encourage within my team.
In our industry, I perceive our work as a luxury item. We are creators of high-end bespoke spaces where people live, work, and play. At KAV Kreative, our commitment is clear: we want our service and expertise to take centre stage, ensuring our clients experience the premium service they deserve. What sets us apart is the unique blend of highly skilled and personable designers who not only possess the expertise but also create environments where clients feel at ease, collaborating effortlessly.
This is the ethos of KAV Kreative—Bold, Authentic, and Personable. It goes beyond the strictly business approach, emphasizing a culture that prioritizes not just the end result, but the journey of collaboration and creation.
How are you finding the WOTSO experience at our Zetland site? How has WOTSO supported your business growth?
In 2019, I embarked on the journey of establishing my business with a clear vision—I wanted more than just a workspace; I wanted a creative environment. While driving down South Dowling Street, I saw a vibrant ‘WOTSO’ sign. I quickly googled, learning that WOTSO is a co-working space still under construction. Excited by the potential, I reached out to Paula and arranged an inspection.
Walking into the space for the first time, I saw beyond the construction site, envisioning the vibrant result that is the space everyone shares today. Since its opening, I’ve been the sole tenant, living the dream so to speak, within my corner office with a view. The space is flooded with natural light and offers a unique and fantastic outdoor space and different collaboration spaces to cater for the different work types.
Coming to WOTSO is a joy. The variety of faces, the opportunity to meet new people, and engaging in the diverse events all contribute to the vibrant atmosphere. The friendly staff make it feel like a community. My clients share in this sentiment, often remarking that WOTSO aligns perfectly with our business offering.
Whether utilising the courtyard for casual meetings or our office for more private discussions, visitors love the space. As we’ve expanded, our growing team finds the same appeal, making it a definite plus for potential hires. WOTSO has truly become an integral part of our success story.
